As a coach, it’s important to establish team expectations and an open communication channel from the beginning. Here are a few key things you’ll want to do before the season starts:
Sign up for Practice Slot
Before the season begins, SEPLL’s practice scheduler will contact you to schedule a practice time.
Initial Communication to Team
Once you receive your roster, send an initial email to your full team. Topics to cover include:
- How you will communicate (email, text thread, GameChanger, etc.)
- You may want to recruit assistant coaches, parents to help out managing the batting order at games, and to help organize a snack signup.
- When your first practice and guardian meeting will be.
Plan a Guardian Meeting
All managers are required to hold a guardian meeting prior to the start of the regular season. This is an opportunity to discuss SEPLL’s philosophy, cover safety protocols, find volunteers (i.e. team parents, additional coaching help), discuss guardian and player expectations, and communicate important dates like opening day and your first game. It is also an opportunity for the players’ families to get acquainted with each other, you, and your coaching staff.
Additional Communications Throughout the Season
Often the full season schedule will be released after rosters are announced. Be sure all parents have access to the schedule once it is available.
Towards the end of the season, most teams plan a season-end party.
