Safety Guidelines at the Rookie division

A successful season and rewarding experience for players and families depends upon a safe environment. To that end, please follow the following guidelines:

Player attire and equipment

  • All players must also wear baseball or long pants to prevent scrapes and cuts.
  • All players should wear sneakers with good treads (molded cleats are also OK).
  • Players are not to wear jewelry or watches. Rubber bracelets are considered jewelry.
  • No player is allowed to chew gum at any time during practice or games.
  • Male catchers are required by Little League to wear an athletic cup.

Game and practice safety

  • Arrive early for practices and games and inspect the dug out and field, removing any trash or hazards.
  • During warm-up, players should throw parallel to each other.
  • Only players, coaches, and adults who have submitted background checks and volunteer forms are allowed on the field and in the dugout during a game or practice.
  • Base runners may not run into fielders. They may not slide at the Rookie level, but they should be instructed to get out of the way of a fielder.
  • Players at the position of catcher must wear full protective gear (helmet with mask, chest protector, and leg guards).

Important bat safety

  • Under no circumstances shall any player have a bat in hand until the player is wearing a Little League approved batting helmet, an adult is immediately present, and it is time for the player to bat. Baserunners are required to continue to wear their helmet while on the field.
  • A coach should keep all bats out of the dugout area, and hand players their bats as they approach the plate.
  • No player should throw a bat. Any player who throws a bat while at the plate should be warned on first offense. Any player who throws a bat afterward will be called out (in levels Rookie and higher).
  • If a player habitually throws the bat, suggest having them carry the bat a few feet down the first base path and then drop it. It may be useful to provide them a target about 10 feet down the base path like an orange throw-down base.
  • Clear discarded bats from the area by home plate as quickly as possible.
